How to Disable Autorun in Windows XP

Autorun feature in Windows is helpful for certain condition, especially if we don’t want to inefficiently open My Computer just to explore what is inside the USB flash disk or CD ROM. But what you need to aware is Autorun feature was one of the most susceptible opportunities for viruses to infect your computer. For more security value disabling the Autorun is recommended. Here is the method:

  1. Open Run tool from Start menu.
  2. Type regedit and press Enter. This will open Registry Editor.
  3. Search and expand HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Policies \ Explorer in the left pane.
  4. Check the right pane. Search and double click NoDriveTypeAutoRun. If it doesn’t exist, right click on the right pane, select New \ DWORD Value and create NoDriveTypeAutoRun variable.
  5. In the menu, make sure that Hexadecimal value is selected in Base, and enter 0 value in the Value data:.
  6. Click OK.
