How to Fix Ccsvchst.exe Error on Windows Shutdown

CCsvchst.exe is a part of Norton Internet Security 2007. This process is not a virus or a Trojan as some users have feared. CCsvchst is a perfectly valid and legitimate file. However, certain users of Norton Internet Security 2007 have experienced an increase in CPU usage due to the file, and this is not the only issue they have encountered. Many users also complain that programs they are running frequently hang and that they have to select End Program from the Task Manager in order to end the process. In cases when even Task Manager is not responding, a reboot becomes the only option.

Users have reported that Windows Startup is also slower than usual and that they experience the Ccsvchst.exe error on shutdown as well. Below is the application error message displayed on their screen.

The instruction at "0x059a2df" referenced memory at 0x059a2df" the memory could not be written. Click OK to terminate the Program.

There are several different ways to fix this error.

Solution 1

Run LiveUpdate. This is the first solution you should try. The ccsvchst.exe error is a bug and should be resolved by an update. If this method does not work, go on to solution 2 below.

Solution 2

Go to Symantec’s Norton Removal Tool page. Check which product you have and save your product key as you may need it later.

Follow the instructions for your particular product as listed on the site.

Solution 3

You may also be getting this error because Norton Antivirus 2007 is scanning your floppy or A:\ drive. If you do not have one, the error message will be displayed.

Start Norton Antivirus 2007.

Under Settings, select Auto Protect.

Select Configure.

Select General Settings under the Real-Time Protection tab.

Look in the right pane. Uncheck Scan floppy disk in A: for boot viruses when shutting down.

Click OK.

Reboot.

Solution 4

Start Norton Internet security 2007.

Click on the Norton Internet Security tab.

Go to Settings.

Go to Web Browsing, click on Personal Firewall.

Click Configure.

Internet Security and Firewall Options will open. General settings will be highlighted.

Check that Automatically decide what to do (recommended) is selected in the right pane of the window.

On the left pane of the window, click on Program Control under Personal Firewall.

Check Access settings for:
Microsoft Internet Explorer.
Microsoft Generic Host process for Win32 services.

Make sure that Access is set to Allow.

Click OK.

Solution 5

Uninstall Norton Internet Security 2007 from your machine. If you feel that this antivirus is consuming too many resources and slows down your computing, you may want to consider an alternative antivirus program. You should also install an anti-spyware program to keep your computer free of malware.

After uninstalling Norton, be sure to run a registry scan. A good registry scanner will remove all leftover registry keys and will repair any errors within the registry.
