Restore My Active Desktop button appears on the desktop after installing Internet Explorer 7

After installing Windows Internet Explorer 7 on a computer that is running Microsoft Windows XP with Service Pack 2, a Restore My Active Desktop button appears on the desktop. However, when you click this button, nothing happens.

Warning: This section, method, or task contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully. For added protection, back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs.

To resolve this problem, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.

  2. Locate and then click the following registry subkey: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Desktop\Components

  3. In the right pane, right-click DeskHtmlVersion, and then click Modify.

  4. In the Value data box, type 0, and then click OK.

  5. Exit Registry Editor.

  6. Delete internet temporary files

  7. Click Start, click Run, type %temp%, and temp files.

  8. Log off from Windows, and then log on. The Restore My Active Desktop button has been removed.
