Blank Desktop with error message Windows cannot find C:\WINDOWS\explorer.exe

Solution:

Computer boots to blank desktop with error message 'Windows cannot find C:\WINDOWS\explorer.exe'

  1. Press Ctrl + Alt + delete key
  2. Click New Task
  3. Type cmd
  4. Type cd\windows
  5. Type ren explorer.exe explorercopy.exe
  6. Restart Computer

  7. Click Start -> Run -> Regedit
  8. Click HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Image File Execution Options\explorer.exe
  9. On the right hand side delete the 'debugger' key
